If you get a pot of reasonable depth, you can put canes in it for beans to climb up. This works pretty well - you can even get a traditional runner bean 'pyramid' on your patio this way (which is nice cos runner bean plants & flowers are really pretty). I have done this on my patio - we do have a proper lawn area but a large part of our garden is patio, so we do a lot of container growing.
