DVD rental by post

Alec and I are considering signing up with one of those DVD rental by post things. Our reasoning behind this is that we rather like curling up on the sofa together to watch some TV or a film. We'd quite like to get into a regular weekly habit of having a film night where we show each other films we like. The kinds of films we like to watch aren't usually in Blockbuster. It's not like we'd be after obscure Icelandic documentaries, but I have a penchant for British gay rom/coms and 1980s fantasy films and Alec likes old war movies. There is the very good Mr Stacey's Most Excellent Video Emporium but it's the other side of town and, of course, as a single shop doesn't have the stock of a website.

I've looked at http://www.lovefilm.com which looks good. I think we'd go for the 4 DVDs a month tariff as that's just under one a week and we'd get to have two out at a time, so have plenty of time to post one and get another. They seem to have a very wide range of films, pretty much anything you could expect to see outside of a film festival.

Do any of you have any views on DVD rental by post and who to do it through? I'm also interested in the possibility of downloading films but I don't think that that's practical for us, as I have a Mac and Alec's laptop is very old and slow.

I use easyCinema (dvd.easycinema.com), which I think might be the same people as LoveFilm, as they often deliver LoveFilm-branded DVDs.

With easyCinema you buy £8 blocks of credit, for which you get four DVDs, one at a time. You can keep each for as long as you like, but the credit expires after ninety days. At the rate at which I've been watching films, I find them very convenient.

I think the 4 DVDs a month tariff would suit Alec and me better because it's less than £8 and I'm sure we could get through 4 a month.

We used lovefilm until we were too poor. It worked well for us, and their list was ENORMOUS.

Amazon also do DVD rental, so it might be worth doing a price compare (I seem to remember that using them gets you a discount on buying DVDs too.

Amazon have stopped doing rental and now just refer people to LoveFilm.

We're with LoveFilm. They do what they say they do on the website. Occupationally the disks are borked, they have been good about dealing with this.
