I've seen blogs on other websites which are joint endeavours but where only the small group of contributors can post to the blog but anyone can comment on it. Is this possible on DW? I guess the way to do it would be to have a community in which non-members have posting rights but posts are moderated and it is made clear that only the core group's posts will be approved.

Communities are actually pretty flexible for this kind of thing. You can have a community where anyone can join but only members can post. The settings for who can join, who can make posts directly, who can make posts which will be reserved for your approval, who can comment, and who can read posts are all separate, so you can have just about any combination.

One way to set up what you want: Create a community [http://www.dreamwidth.org/community/create.bml]. Go to the settings page [http://www.dreamwidth.org/community/settings.bml], select Open membership in the left box, and Select members in the right box. After that, go to the privacy settings page [http://www.dreamwidth.org/manage/settings/?cat=privacy], make sure to choose your community from the Work as Account drop-down, and you can choose who can see the entries and who can comment.
