I have no problem paying membership fees to a shul, but if the shul also demands that you sponser 2 kiddushes a year, and there is subtle pressure to make sure you shell out the cash for the expensive stuff like lox or organic juices, well, that really doesn't sit well with me. Especially when half the people at the kiddush are regulars who just can't be bothered to be members and participate in the kiddush sponsership, but don't mind eating all the food.
