Round up of the year
Dec. 27th, 2008 07:43 pm![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
1. What did you do in 2008 that you'd never done before? Got married. Moved into non-communal accommodation. Travelled in a sleeper train. Understood Hebrew grammar.
2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year? I don't think that I made any. Not sure about this year.
3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
loveneverfails managed to push out her fourth baby at home (and she's younger than me, I better get a move on). Apart from that I think the closest connection would be that my ex-girlfriend,
mummyfrances became an aunty.
4. Did anyone close to you die? My husband's grandfather, a couple of weeks before our wedding.
5. What countries did you visit? Italy, France and Switzerland. I'm not quite sure whether we went through any other countries on the train.
6. What would you like to have had in 2009 that you lacked in 2008? A bit more of a work ethic. A husband in theological college. (That's for the husband I already have to be in theological college, I'm not going to dump Alec if he fails his BAP.)
7. What date from 2008 will remain etched upon your memory, and why? August 24th, that's when I became a Mrs.
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year? I'm not sure whether it's passing my first year report or organising my crazy wedding.
9. What was your biggest failure? Probably wasting way too much time by not getting my head sorted.
10. Did you suffer illness or injury? The combination of a nice oven and a giant Le Cruset casserole dish have led to my always having at least one burn mark on my forearm since we moved into our flat.
11. What was the best thing you bought? Probably my MacBook. Alec is very jealous.
12. Whose behavior merited celebration? Alec being able to stoically cope with my worst freak outs.
13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed? A certain bishop who claimed he wouldthrow his toys out of the pram leave the Church of England if it accepted female bishops without making special arrangements for priests who think that girls have cooties, but strangely still hasn't resigned yet.
14. Where did most of your money go? Rent, bills, train fares, wedding but I'm going to get that back from my dad once I tell him how much I spent.
15. What did you get really, really, really excited about? Getting married.
16. What song will always remind you of 2008? Probably any of the songs from our wedding. (I don't really listen to contemporary music much so I miss out on that Zeitgeist.)
17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. happier or sadder? Happier
ii. thinner or fatter? Maybe a little bit fatter.
iii. richer or poorer? Poorer, but with a better quality of life.
18. What do you wish you'd done more of? Being productive.
19. What do you wish you'd done less of? Prevaricating and feeling crap.
20. How will you be spending Christmas? With my in-laws.
22. Did you fall in love in 2008? Not exactly, kept falling more in love. (Sorry if that made you feel nauseous.)
23. How many one-night stands? None.
24. What was your favorite TV program? Apparitions (or 'Judge John Deed, demon killer' as we like to refer to it).
25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year? Hate? I'm not sure about hate. There are definitely people who, when mentioned, make my face screw up in barely contained rage.
26. What was the best book you read? It's hard to think of books I've read completely this year. Probably The History of Scientific Revolutions which I think is an amazing book and featured heavily in my first year report.
27. What was your biggest musical discovery? Possibly Blue Fringe particularly the Shidduch song but technically I first heard that in 2007.
28. What did you want and get? Lots of wedding presents. Sun for my wedding. I nice place to live.
29. What did you want and not get? For Alec to pass his BAP.
30. What was your favorite film of this year? I think I only saw one film in the cinema this year which was Wall-E.
31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you? I can't quite remember what I did on my birthday. I think I visited the Duomo in Florence with my husband and got petrified of the height on top of the dome. We definitely went to a vegetarian restaurant and was very excited to be able to order 'mystery food' because I didn't understand the Italian menu and not worrying because the menu marked which food was vegan. I was 25.
32. What's one thing that would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying? Possibly having my fiancé in the same city, but then I don't know how much good stuff in our lives has and will result from that job and separation.
33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2008? Pretty similar to previous years, I rarely buy new clothes. That would be long sleeved T-shirt, mid shin or ankle length skirt roughly matching jumper or cardy, from 25th August onwards add coordinated head scarf was added to the mix.
34. What kept you sane? Sane? Almost certainly Alec. Possibly the confidence I have that even if I really fuck up I'll probably still be in a better position than most people.
35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most? Not sure. I've developed a strange attraction to David Mitchell. There's something about his young fogey unrepentantly middle-classness.
36. What political issue stirred you the most? The only thing that got me out to protest was Julie Bindel being nominated for a Stonewall award. Judging by the 'politics' filter on here I've been stirred by governments trying to 'protect' people by restricting their religious freedom.
37. Who did you miss? Obama's victory. I went to bed.
38. Who was the best new person you met? It's hard to think of any new people I've met this year.
39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2008. First year reports are in no way as big and scary as most first year PhD students think. Buying loads of cheap seasonal flowers and putting them in 99p Ikea vases makes really great looking table centrepieces.
40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year.
Another bride,
Another groom,
Another sunny honeymoon,
Another season, another reason, for making whoopee
A lot of shoes,
A lot of rice,
The groom is nervous,
He answers twice,
It's really killing, that he's so willing, to make whoopee.
2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year? I don't think that I made any. Not sure about this year.
