A couple of days ago Alec and I were chatting about the future and came up with an idea of how we could one day have a family pet despite Alec being allergic to fur and feathers. Pigs! As intelligent and sociable as a dog but without the allergy inducing fur and either way, they live outside. Also good because they can be fed a vegetarian diet. It's illegal to feed pigs food which could have been in contact with any meat, so kitchen scraps from a diary kosher kitchen are almost perfect to supplement their diet. Another plus is that it would probably ensure that our children never ate pork.

I actually thought about having a pet pig. Asked a she'elah from a Masorti rav. Apparently, it's a no-no because it's a pig and a pig symbolises the Ultimate Treif. Now, I don't know if there are more lenient opinions out there or if you care altogether but I was bummed.

I had looked forward to being a rabbi strutting down the street with her pet pig on a leash, wearing a a t-shirt saying, "Love 'm, don't eat 'm".

Ah, that's no fun. Most pets are treif. Alec was more looking forward to taking the pigs to church with him for morning prayer. I suggested we could have guest the weight of the pig competitions at the parish fair and he could use the pigs as inappropriate visual aids for children's talks.

I also think that is silly. Dogs, cats, rabbits and guineapigs are treif, too, and kept as pets. Rabbits are eaten in Europe and many people keep them as pets. Our Masorti Rabbi has one dog (other one died), rabbits and guineapigs and nobody complains. In China they eat everything including the most favourite pets.
