So, it costs 50p to £1 plus VAT to hire a cloth napkin. I could buy a pack of 100 recycled paper napkins for less than £4 and chuck them in the compostable bin after the wedding. This calls for a poll.

Losing the plot; what are you planning to do for dinner? Selwyn provided all our napkins, which I never thought about at all. Even if you're bringing and sharing Queens' might be cheaper than random napkin hire places?

We're going to have a sit down buffet in the Guildhall provided by a team of volunteer minions, so we have to hire all of the tablewear. Most of it isn't that bad because actually when you work it out hiring a china plate costs about the same as buying a disposable plate, but there is a big price difference when it comes to napkins and table clothes. I'm coming around to thinking that it would be better to get paper napkins and paper table clothes for the buffet tables.

If you use actual paper napkins you can put them in the green bin afterwards and it turns into compost, but if you get those ones that look like paper but are plasticised beyond all use like they have in Clowns, they will probably not compost.

I'm not sure the cloth ones are more environmentally friendly once you factor in industrial-strength laundering.

Paper ones would actually be better for a buffet imho, as long as they don't look like recycled toilet paper. That way you can buy an excess and no-one has to worry about hanging on to theirs. Especially if they keep getting up for more food.

Recycle the cloth table covers into the dress! And then wear a t-shirt or that "something old" for whichever part of the day the table covers are required to be on the tables. The cost of the clothes and the dress would be one and the same, and you could feel morally good!
